Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs visits Ga Moeka Bulk water, Moretele Illegal Dumping Site and Dikebu Housing Projects in Moretele Local Municipality

The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs led by Acting Chairperson, Hon. Nathan Oliphant conducted an oversight at Ga Moeka Bulk Water project; Moretele Local Municipal Illegal Dumping Site and Dikebu Housing Projects in Moretele Local Municipality.

The oversight visit is part of the oversight programme in Bojanala District aimed at strengthening oversight and public participation and promoting accountability and transparency in government. During the program, Members of the Provincial Legislature will interact with different provincial departments and Members of the Executive Council; Mayors; Accounting Officers; and members of the Municipal Public Accounts Committees. Different Portfolio Committees will conduct oversight visits to various projects in the district to check their status quo and challenges therein.

Ga Moeka Bulk-Water Project
The R163 million project includes seven Wards consists of reticulation and installation of 1620 yard connections, gravity bulk pipeline and rising main pipeline of 34km, 3.5ML water storages on concrete reservoir through steel tanks, rehabilitation of boreholes and 3.5ML water treatment plant.

Moretele Local Municipal Illegal Dumping Site
The illegal site was established by the municipality in 2016 but was declared illegal in 2018 by the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism through the imposition of a fine and recommendations. Part of the recommendations of the department was for the municipality to rehabilitate and close the illegal site and establish a new landfill site.

The municipality has since received a new site through a land donation in Makapanstad from the tribal authority and has submitted requests through various departments which include Department of Public Works and Roads for land ownership license. The project for the new landfill site has been budgeted for R107 million through Municipal Infrastructure Grant. Hon. Nathan said the municipality should ensure that the project is reprioritised as the illegal dumping is a health hazard for communities.

Dikebu Housing Project
The R68 million Rural Housing Project was for 300 units which commenced in December 2022 and is practically completed at R63 million on expenditure. Although the project initially experienced challenges, the situation improved overtime as the contractor, Kwete Holdings is on final stages of completing the project.

Hon. Oliphant said the Committee welcomes the developments on the project as it will benefit the communities. “We are very impressed that the female contractor has performed well as the houses are in a good condition and will be ready for occupation soon,” said he said.
