The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Honourable Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, accompanied MEC for Community Safety and Transport, Honourable Virginia Tlhapi, today visited Sweding Village, Ward 20 in Mahikeng following the brutal murder of Omphemetse “Mimi” Moleleki whose body was found dumped on the streets.

The visit was to convey heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to stand in solidarity with the community of Sweding Village. Hon. Speaker Motsumi strongly condemned this barbaric act and described it as a direct attack on the dignity, safety and rights of women in our province. “This brutal killing is an affront to our Constitution and to our collective humanity. As the Legislature, we are deeply pained. No woman should live in fear or die such a painful death. We call upon the South African Police Service to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible are swiftly arrested and brought to justice,” said Hon. Motsumi.

The Speaker further called on men and community structures to become active partners in the fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist police investigations.

The North West Provincial Legislature reiterates its call for a society free from GBV and femicide, where women and children are safe and protected.
