The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management, chaired by Hon. Freddy Sonakile, notes with serious concern the ongoing taxi protest in the Klerksdorp area, including the blockage of the N12 and surrounding routes.
While the Committee acknowledges the legitimate concerns raised by members of the taxi industry, particularly regarding delays in the processing of operating licences and the poor condition of certain roads, the Committee strongly condemns the lawlessness, intimidation of commuters, and disruption of economic activity that have accompanied the protest.
No grievance justifies the blocking of national routes or the intimidation of citizens and motorists. Reports of harassment directed at private motorists and e-hailing operators are unacceptable and must be addressed decisively by law enforcement authorities.
The Committee therefore urgently calls on the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management to implement the following interventions:
• Convene a multi-stakeholder meeting within seven (7) days involving the Department of Public Works, municipal leadership, and SANTACO to agree on time-bound solutions to the challenges raised.
• Ensure immediate law enforcement intervention to restore order, prevent intimidation, and protect all road users, including e-hailing operators.
Furthermore, the Committee will schedule a public accountability hearing where all relevant stakeholders will be required to appear before the Committee and present:
• A full audit of all outstanding operating licence applications, including reasons for delays and a clear plan to resolve the backlog.
• A road infrastructure intervention plan prioritising critical routes, including roads in Jouberton and surrounding areas.
The Committee will not allow communities and commuters to be held hostage due to administrative failures or unlawful conduct.
“The people of the North West deserve safe, reliable and lawful public transport services, without fear, intimidation or disruption to their daily lives,” said Hon. Sonakile.
