Public Works Portfolio Committee Calls for Urgent Funding to Unlock Key Marikana Road Project

Marikana, Rustenburg – The Chairperson of the North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Roads, Hon. Paul Sebego, has called for urgent interventions to secure funding for the long-awaited upgrading of Road D1325 from Buffelspoort to the R566 through Marikana, describing the project as critical for improving road safety, connectivity and economic development.

The Committee conducted an oversight visit to inspect the current condition of the approximately 18-kilometre gravel road, where Members were accompanied by officials from the North West Department of Public Works and Roads. During the site inspection, the Committee received a technical briefing on the scope of the proposed upgrade and assessed the challenges experienced by road users along the route.

The Department informed the Committee that the project entails upgrading the existing gravel road to a surfaced (tarred) road, including the construction of four pavement layers, bridge upgrades and drainage infrastructure. Members were further informed that although the project has reached Stage 3 of planning, it has not been allocated funding in the current Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF). The Department is therefore exploring alternative funding options, including possible partnerships with mining companies operating in the area. 1.Upgrading from gravel to surface D1325 from Buffel to Tlapa through Marikana.

Hon. Sebego expressed concern over the continued delays, noting that the poor condition of the road negatively affects surrounding communities, motorists, businesses and emergency services.
“Road infrastructure is a catalyst for economic growth and social development. Communities in this area deserve safe, reliable roads that improve access to schools, healthcare facilities, employment opportunities and markets. The Committee therefore urges the Department to accelerate efforts to secure funding and ensure this important project proceeds without further delay,” said Hon. Sebego.

Members observed firsthand the condition of the gravel road during the oversight visit and emphasised that upgrading the route would significantly improve mobility within the Bojanala Platinum District while enhancing safety for commuters and supporting local economic activity.
The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening oversight over infrastructure delivery and will continue engaging the Department on progress made towards securing funding and implementing this strategic road project.
