MORETELE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY | 04 AUGUST 2026 – As part of the North West Provincial Legislature’s Oversight Week programme, the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, led by Hon. Mpho Khunou, today conducted oversight visits to development projects within the Moretele Local Municipality. The Committee was accompanied by the Chief Whip of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Motlalepula Rosho and Hon. Johanna Steenkamp.
The oversight programme focused on assessing the impact of government-supported economic development initiatives, with visits undertaken to Lefakong Farming and Projects Primary Cooperative Limited and Bokamoso Food.
At Lefakong Farming, the Committee received a comprehensive briefing from the North West Development Corporation (NWDC) on the support provided to the cooperative, including market access and export development initiatives that have enabled the enterprise to expand into international markets. The cooperative, based in Moretele, specialises in the cultivation, processing and marketing of organic moringa products and has successfully exported products to the United States and Botswana through support from the NWDC and its partners.
The NWDC has spent almost R200 000 in assist the project to be where it is.
Hon. Khunou emphasised that the purpose of the oversight visit was to assess whether public resources allocated to economic development programmes are translating into sustainable economic opportunities, job creation and improved livelihoods for local communities.
The Committee also engaged stakeholders on challenges affecting the sustainability and growth of the projects, while identifying opportunities for strengthened collaboration between government entities and beneficiaries to maximise socio-economic development.
The oversight visit forms part of the Legislature’s commitment to strengthening accountability, transparency and effective service delivery through direct engagement with implementing departments, public entities and communities across the province
