The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management (COSATMA) in the North West Provincial Legislature, chaired by Hon Freddy Sonakile, welcomes the appointment of Lieutenant General Arthur Adams as the substantive Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West, effective from 1 August 2026.
“After almost two years without a substantive Provincial Commissioner, this appointment brings much-needed stability and leadership at a critical time for policing in our province. Lieutenant General Adams’ 34 years of experience will undoubtedly be an asset as he assumes this important responsibility.”
“His appointment comes as the province continues to confront serious crime challenges and in the wake of the South African Human Rights Commission’s concerning findings on the state of several police stations. Our communities deserve a police service that is professional, visible, accountable and responsive,” said Hon. Sonakile.
The Committee also expresses its appreciation to Major General Asaneng and Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Naidoo for providing leadership and ensuring continuity during this prolonged transitional period.
The Committee will continue to discharge its constitutional mandate without fear or favour. The Committee will also conduct oversight visits to police stations, engage communities, interrogate reports and hold the police accountable where improvements are required.
The Committee trusts that Lieutenant General Adams will embrace this oversight and work closely with the Committee, the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service and the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management in advancing safer communities.
“The North West cannot become a playground for criminals. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the rule of law is upheld, communities are protected, and policing in our province continues to improve through accountability, cooperation and effective oversight,” said Hon. Sonakile.
The Committee congratulates Lieutenant General Adams on his appointment and looks forward to a constructive working relationship in the interest of the people of the North West.
