For the last leg of the School re opening oversight programme the Hon. Speaker, Dr. Desbo Mohono visited shools in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality, two primary schools in Mantsho village as well as Seolong in Mabeskraal.
Mantsho Primary and Seolong Primary Schools depict similar dire circumstances where there are 45 learners in total at Mantsho Primary and 23 learners overall at Seolong Primary School.
Both schools apply the multigrade system where learners of different grades share one class because of the learner; teacher ratio. This poses a great challenge to both the teacher and the learners. Whilst these learning institutions are fraught with many challenges like lack of water and a lack of enough budget allocation to each school, they continue to strive to provide the best education to these learners.
With Mantsho Primary School being a quintile 1 school and Seolong Primary being a quintile 4 school, principals from both these schools lament a serious lack of interest by some learners’ parents, who never make an effort to show up at school when they are being alerted to concerns pertaining to their children. Since Wednesday, the Hon. The speaker has been in contact with all relevant officials to alert them to the circumstances in each of the 6 schools she has visited.
By the end of this monitoring of schools, Sewagodimo High School had already been receiving their intervention to fix the falling ceiling in some classes, as well as Gobusamang Primary school, whom have been in need of some furniture. Meanwhile, the principal at Motlhaputseng High School in Silverkraans was implored to include more sporting codes at school, as well as to plant vegetables in the schools garden. To ensure that learners eat a balanced meal. As opposed to the pap and milk that was on the menu.
With regards to Motsatsi Primary School in Vrede, near Madikwe, the school has toilets built. However, buckets have been installed. Instead of the normal flushing toilets. The Honorable Speaker has made recommendations to the relevant officials on these aspects.
