The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Dr. Desbo Mohono and Members of the Provincial Legislature visited schools for the second day as part of the North West Provincial Legislature School Readiness Oversight Programme. Today Dr Mohono visited Motlhapiseng Secondary and Motsatsi Primary School.
At Motlhapiseng Secondary, Dr Mohono met with the School Governing Body, the principal, Mr George Kuboyankwe, the Mayoral Committee Member of the Local municipality. The school received 93 % pass rate for the 2024 matric results. It is well functioning as teaching and learning started on the same day the schools re opened but has a shortage of Maths and Science teacher for Grade 10-12, a matter that the Speaker, Dr Mohono did not take kindly. It also had 1 Grade 10 learner who is pregnant. Dr Mohono encouraged the community members that were part of the meeting to assist the school by getting involve in their children’s lives. “Parents have given their responsibilities of raising their to teachers.
The Community must rally behind the school to rid it of the social iils affecting children. Motivational talks to learners are important to influence their minds,” said Dr Mohono.
During the walkabout the school Dr Mohono also checked the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) to check what the learners were supposed to be eating for the day. She did not take kindly to the fact that they were going to eat pap and milk, a diet she felt that it’s not balanced. “Some of these learners will not have any othiernmeal except for this one, therefore their meals must include proper vegetables, protein etc.,” said Dr Mohono. When she called the Department of Education on this matter, Dr Mohono was told that themeal was designed by the national department of education and it cascaded down to provinces.
At Motsatsi Primary, Dr Mohono found the school well function with no material problems but also encouraged the principal to work hand in hand with the SGB and Community mambers.
