The Chairperson of the North West Legislature Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development, Hon Karabo Magagane conducted oversight visits to Ntebogang Combined School, Suping Primary School, Mathews Mangope Secondary School, Gareosenye Primary School and Ramotshere Moiloa Technical School as part of assessing the state of readiness for the 2025 school year.

Amongst some of the challenges found at most schools was the issue of teenage pregnancy, vandalism at schools, no fencing, toilet blockages, lack of funding, tools of trade and most learners who don’t have identity documentation (ID’s).

Hon Magagane noted the lack of intervention given to learners faced with mental and physical disabilities attending mainstream schools instead of special schools. The Chairperson stated that all schools need to have at least one social worker and school nurse assigned to thoroughly check profile of learners at schools. “More needs to be done to ensure that learners are profiled correctly at schools and are counselled thoroughly to safeguard their future, as many are already suffering abuse at the hands of loved ones, families and general social systems,” said Hon Magagane.

The Chairperson also noted the need for more social workers and Intergrated School Health Programmes as currently there is only one school nurse who services all 100 schools in the Ramotshere Moiloa District with each school having 2 or more cases that may require health assistance.

Amongst some of the recommendations made by the Chairperson was to work on making a Learner Profile to be compulsory at schools to avoid misplacing learners who could benefit more if placed correctly according to their abilities.

Hon Magagane also recommended the need for a strengthened integrated programme of relevant departments, such as Home Affairs, SASSA, Department of Health and the Department of Social Development that would assist with most issues faced by learners both in the mainstream and special schools.
Above all the Chairperson congratulated all learners who passed their matriculations exceptionally contributing to the 81.6% achieved in the North West Province.
