On 27 July 2023, the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Basetsana R.S. Dantjie together with Members of the Legislature and staff will commemorate Mandela Day under the theme: “The Legacy Lives on Through You”. The Speaker will spend the day at Ntshalle le Bana Care Centre which accommodates children with special needs, in Lekgalong village near Rustenburg at 09h00.
The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Lina Miga will lead another team of Members and Staff to Batho – Tiisang Disabled Centre. The centre cares for people with disability at Kopela Village in Tswaing Local Municipality. The third team will be led by the Chief Whip, Hon. Paul Sebegoe and they will spend the day at Adrian Losper Soup Kitchen project in Colridge near Vryburg. The soup kitchen is a community based project meant to provide support, crime prevention ,victim empowerment as well as moral regeneration programme to orphans, vulnerable children and destitute families.
The Chairperson of Chairpersons, Hon. Kabelo Mataboge will lead a team which will spend the day at Dominionville informal settlement in Klerksdorp. The informal settlement is home to about 500 unemployed and disadvantaged residents. The Department of Home Affairs truck has been roped into the activities to bring services to the people of Dominionville.
The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and building a global movement for good. The day seeks to motivate people to:
- Observe Nelson Mandela Day as a day of humanitarian action in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy, and
- Practice and instill the spirit of ‘Vukuzenzele’ amongst communities.
