The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Education, Culture, Arts, Sports and Recreation, led by Acting Chairperson Hon. Paul Sebegoe

The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Education, Culture, Arts, Sports and Recreation, led by Acting Chairperson Hon. Paul Sebegoe, conducted oversight visits to Mpolokang and Mokgakala Secondary Schools in Lekubung Village, Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality. The visits formed part of the Legislature’s Oversight Week in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District, aimed at assessing challenges affecting schools and strengthening accountability and service delivery. At Mpolokang Secondary School, the Committee was informed that the non-payment of scholar transport service providers has disrupted transport for learners, with concern raised about the impact on Grade 12 learners preparing for their final examinations. The school also highlighted the need for additional classrooms and the repair of vandalised ablution facilities. At Mokgakala Secondary School, the Committee was informed of ongoing overcrowding, inadequate mobile classrooms and the need for additional classrooms and a school hall. The school also raised concerns about learner discipline and substance abuse. The Committee called on both schools to submit comprehensive reports detailing their challenges and committed to engaging the relevant departments to address the issues raised. The Committee will also follow up on scholar transport, infrastructure needs and interventions for learners affected by substance abuse, ensuring that identified challenges are not only recorded but addressed. The oversight visit reaffirmed the Legislature’s commitment to ensuring that learners have access to safe, supportive and conducive environments for teaching and learning.
