HON. MOTSUMI CONDEMNS THE CONTINUED ACTS OF VIOLENCE AND BRUTAL KILLINGS OF WOMEN

The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Ntsetsao Viola Motsumi, has learned with shock, sadness and outrage at the continued acts of violence and brutal killings of women in the province.

Hon Motsumi strongly condemns these barbaric and inhumane acts, which have no place in a democratic society that respects the Constitution and the dignity of all people, especially women.
“It is painful that as we should be celebrating and advancing the rights and gains of women, we continue to witness women being violated, abused and killed, mostly by people known to them. This cannot be allowed to continue”, she said.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the senseless killing of women. Women are the backbone of our society and pillars of our families. No society can claim to be free while women live in fear”, Hon Motsumi added.

“As the Legislature, we call on the South African Police Service to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book and face the full might of the law”.
Hon Motsumi has called on communities, traditional leaders as well as men to speak out, to report abuse and to protect women and children as gender-based violence is not a family matter to be hidden but a crime against humanity.

The North West Provincial Legislature conveys its sincere condolences to all families who have lost their loved ones through gender-based violence.
The North West Provincial Legislature remains committed to using its oversight and law-making powers to fight GBV and to ensure that government departments tasked with protecting women and children account for their programmes and resources.
