NORTH WEST LEGISLATURE CHAIRPERSON OF CHAIRPERSONS LEADS MANDELA DAY OUTREACH TO SUPPORT ELDERLY AND LEARNERS IN THE DR. RUTH S. MOMPATI DISTRICT

The Chairperson of Chairpersons of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Tebogo Modise, dedicated 67 minutes of service in commemoration of International Nelson Mandela Day through community outreach initiatives at the Ikageng Adult Centre and Saruchera Primary School in Vryburg, Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.
The annual commemoration seeks to inspire citizens to take action in building a better society by embracing the values of service, compassion, responsibility and active citizenship championed by the late former President Nelson Mandela. It also promotes the spirit of Vukuzenzele (self-initiative), encouraging communities to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Joined by officials of the North West Provincial Legislature and various stakeholders, Hon. Modise visited the Ikageng Adult Centre, where elderly beneficiaries received food and essential support. A total of 25 food parcels, 25 blankets, socks, cleaning materials and health screening services were provided to the Centre’s approximately 54 elderly members through the support of the Department of Health.

As part of improving the Centre’s environment, the Department of Public Works and Roads deployed trucks and grass-cutting equipment to clear overgrown vegetation surrounding the facility. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development donated a variety of vegetable seeds to establish a food garden, which is expected to improve food security while creating opportunities for the Centre to generate a modest income.

During the visit, Hon. Modise expressed concern about the conditions under which the Centre operates, noting that the elderly currently utilise a small informal structure and a shipping container as their facility. She committed to engaging the relevant municipality and government departments to explore sustainable solutions for the provision of suitable accommodation.

The outreach programme continued at Saruchera Primary School, where Hon. Modise donated 25 pairs of school shoes to indigent learners, together with cleaning materials to support a safe and conducive learning environment.
Hon. Modise said Mandela Day should inspire all South Africans to move beyond symbolic gestures and embrace acts of service that create lasting change.

“Nelson Mandela taught us that each of us has the power to make a difference, regardless of how small our contribution may seem. Today is not merely about dedicating 67 minutes—it is about restoring dignity, offering hope and demonstrating that government and communities can work together to improve the lives of our people. Let us carry the spirit of Ubuntu and selfless service beyond Mandela Day and make it a daily commitment,” said Hon Modise.
