The North West Provincial Legislature Public Participation and Education Unit, in partnership with Civic Root Advocacy (CRA), the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and SALGA, is conducted civic education workshops in the Madibeng Local Municipality.
Approximately 50 participants from communities across the municipality attended the workshop, where they gained valuable insight into the Legislature’s public participation processes, the relationship between governance and citizen engagement, and the importance of exercising their democratic right to vote.
Civic Root Advocacy (CRA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting civic engagement, democratic participation and public policy advocacy. The organisation works to advance equity, justice and inclusive governance by advocating for public policies that reflect the voices, needs and lived experiences of communities, rather than the interests of a privileged few.
CRA also engages policymakers, government departments and oversight institutions to promote legislation that advances social equity, justice and economic inclusion. Through advocacy campaigns, community mobilisation and expert policy submissions, the organisation strives to ensure that legislation responds to the needs of marginalised communities.
In addition, CRA delivers civic education, voter education and leadership development programmes that empower citizens, particularly young people and women from marginalised communities, with the knowledge and skills to participate meaningfully in South Africa’s democracy.
During the workshop, stakeholders educated community members on a range of topics, including the election and roles of Mayors and Executive Mayors, Municipal Councils, Ward Councillors and Proportional Representation (PR) Councillors, voter education, and the constitutional mandate and responsibilities of the North West Provincial Legislature.
The next civic education workshop will take place on 17 July 2026 in the Mahikeng Local Municipality.
