The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Roads led by Hon Paul Sebegoe conducted oversight visit to check progress registered on the rehabilitation and reseal of road P13/4 from Wolmaranstad to Wesselbron which extends to the Free State border as well as special maintenance on sections of road D155 from Kareepan to Kameelbom.
This was during the oversight week that is currently taking place in various regions based in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District that kick started on the 08 – 11 Oct 2024. The program is aimed at strengthening oversight and public participation and to promote accountability and transparency in government.
The rehabilitation and reseal of road P13/4 from Wolmaranstad to Wesselbron which extends to the Free State border, is a 37km route from the intersection of P13/3 and R502 to the intersection of P13/4 (R505) and R502 in Makwassie Town to Wesselbron (Free State Border). The project aims to create 189 work opportunities. It was started on the 24 May 2024 and planned completion date on the 24 November 2025.
The special maintenance on sections of road D155 from Kareepan to Kameelbom is a 23,4 km route that started on the 27 July 2024 and to be completed in January 2025.
The committee appreciated progress made on both routes and noted amongst other challenges delays in labour recruitment processes that took longer than planned which led to the programme of works to be affected, delays in the SSME and CLO appointment.
Works on the rehabilitation and reseal of road P13/4 project were disrupted by the members of the Community for 8 days. The protests started from 12 August 2024 till 20 August 2024. The disgruntled members of the Community were demanding immediate work opportunities on the project.
