The visit forms part of the Oversight Week that the North West Provincial Legislature is embarking on in the Dr Ruth Segomotso Mompati from the 29 August to the 01 September 2023.
Rural Water projects was appointed in October 2022 for the contraction of 4 boreholes, in fact 1 had to be refurbished whilst the other 3 had to be reconstructed from scratch. The budget for the project is R24million and 93% of the work is done to the satisfaction of all parties involved, which includes the Dr Ruth Segomotso Mompati District Municipality (which is a water authority for the district), Greater Taung local municipality including the Community Liaison Officer. The contractor confirmed to the committee by the 6 September 2023 the project will be 100% complete, they are only left with fixing leakages and small things to do.
Hon. Dliso was happy with the work completed but u red he’d the District Municipality to involve Taung local municipality in all its dealings with Magalies water, which the district said will be handling operational maintenance. “A lot of people including municipalities have been raising concerns about Magalies water, therefore the district municipality must share its Memorandum of Understanding with Magalies Water with the Committee and the local municipality, a maintenance plan and schedule of engagements with all parties involved by Wednesday 6 September 2023”, said Hon. Dliso.
The Committee went to Kolong village to check on the water challenges that community had written to the Committee about. Some village representatives told Hon Dliso that the village has been without water for almost 4years as their only source which is a borehole whose mechanism that included a windmill was vandalised.
Hon. Dliso gave the two municipalities, the district and the local municipality one week to resolve the matter. “I want a report by Friday 8 September 2023 detailing how you have resolved this water challenge failing which l will be forced to escalate the matter to the MEC for Local Government who is also the Acting Premier Nono Maloyi,” said Hon Dliso.
