The Office of the Speaker in the North West Provincial Legislature represented by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Linah Miga in conjunction with the South African Legislative Sector (SALS) donated food parcels and a cash donation of R20 210 to Ithuto Community Disability Project (centre) in Moruleng near Mogwase. This formed part of the Women’s Day celebrations and SALS Professional Development Seminar which was held at Sun City from 7-9 August 2023. The cash was voluntarily donated by delegates from all the nine legislatures and national parliament who attended the seminar.
The centre which was established on 2018 by a group of community members has a total of 57 beneficiaries who are mostly deaf and blind. It specialises on teaching learners with disabilities on upholstery and furniture, manufacturing, wielding and related equipment. The centre also manufactures furniture, linen and other products such as vases and pillows that are sold to the community members and organisations. The National Lottery together with Platina Mine donated the centre’s building, industrial machinery and equipment as well as water borehole and material.
Hon. Linah Miga said the donations are part of the kind community work of the Office of the Speaker and the legislative sector as a whole. “We are thankful to all the delegates who saw it fit to make cash donations to this centre and our office to support the centre which is fully operational and is helping people with disabilities with relevant skills. We would also like to thank all the sponsors including Sun City International for their support. We would like to urge the Moses Kotane Local Municipality to ensure that electricity is connected to the new building of the centre that was donated by Platina Mine,” said Hon. Miga.
The Chairperson: Forum of Secretaries of the SA Legislative Sector, and Secretary to the National Council of Provinces, Adv. Eric Phindela said the Secretaries of all the provincial legislatures, Secretary to Parliament, National Assembly and Parliament decided to ask the delegates of the seminar for any voluntary cash donations to the centre and an amount of R20 210 was raised. “As part of the Mandela Day and Women’s month commemorations, we needed to help our communities through these kind and necessary donation,” said Adv. Phindela.
