The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Education, Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation chaired by Hon. Paul Sebegoe congratulates Mr. Tete Dijana for winning the Comrades Marathon for the second year in a row after also winning it in 2022. Mr. Dijana who is a Nedbank Athletics Club runner finished first on the men’s race on a time of 05:13:58 thus breaking David Gatebe’s record since 2016.
Hon. Sebegoe said the esteemed marathon runner who hails from Lonely Park village in Mahikeng in the North West Province has made the province proud on this achievement. “We are very happy with the record breaking performance from a runner who comes from humble beginnings and has been running for many years now. He has become a role model to fellow athletes and young aspiring long distance runners from the province,” said Hon. Sebegoe.
He also complemented fellow runners from the province who finished on the top 10 at the Comrades marathon race. “We are also happy and we want to applaud Ms. Adele Broodryk who finished second on the women’s race, Mr. Edward Mothibi who is the 2021 winner, Mr. Johannes Makgetla, Mr. Gordon Lesetedi, Mr. Onalenna Khonkhobe, Mr. Joseph Manyedi and Mr. Gif Kelehe who won the race in 2015.
“The Committee also congratulates the legislature’s employees, Mr. Simo Mncwango, Mr. Kabelo Duiker and Mr. Mpho Mahlaekoleng who participated on the race. It clearly shows that the province has astounding performers in long and short distance running and they continue to paint a brighter picture for the sports in the province. We would like to thank their family members, supporters, Department of Arts, Culture and Sports and Recreation, sponsors and everyone that has shown these great athletes support and courage at the world’s ultimate human race,” said Hon. Sebegoe.
