Rule 107 of the Standing Rules provides that Members of the Legislature must be given an opportunity to give notices of motion only on a sitting day of the House, and the motion must be in writing, must deal with the subject matter within the competence of the Legislature, must be concise, must refer to a single subject matter and comply with any other requirements of the Rules. This Rule give Members of the Legislature an opportunity to debate matters of public interest,

The last two debates are thematic debates and the Legislature usually hold debates that are aligned to particular times or events in the calendar. The month of April is recognised in the Republic of South Africa as a Freedom Month emanating from the fact that the universal suffrage was attained for the first time in South Africa on the 27th of April 1994. The debate does not only celebrate the day but also afford the Legislature an opportunity to take stalk of the challenges that are still affecting Members of the public to enjoy their freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.

The debate on Workers Day recognised and celebrate Workers Day which is International recognised and celebrated on the 1st of May each year but also seeks to take stalk of the efforts that are being made to create more jobs and tackle the challenges that are affecting workers in this country.

The debates were robust in keeping in line with our vision and mission of being the people’s assembly.
