North West Legislature Portfolio Committee on Economic Development and Environment to Convene Stakeholder Engagement on Illegal Mining and Unauthorised Wash Plants

The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, chaired by Hon. Mpho Khunou, will convene a stakeholder engagement to address growing concerns relating to illegal mining activities, unauthorised chrome wash plants, environmental degradation and enforcement challenges in the North West Province.

The engagement follows concerns raised by the Committee regarding regulatory gaps, environmental compliance, illegal mining operations and the need for improved coordination among government institutions responsible for enforcement.

The meeting is scheduled as follows:

Time: 09h00

Venue: Brits White Hall, Madibeng Local Municipality

The meeting will bring together the provincial Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, the national departments that includes the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to deliberate on measures aimed at strengthening regulation, improving compliance, enhancing enforcement capacity and safeguarding affected communities and the environment.

The Committee will also engage with the Chairperson of Women in Tourism to discuss matters affecting the tourism sector and opportunities for women’s participation and growth within the industry.
