The Chairperson of the North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management, Hon. Freddy Sonakile joined the MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, MEC Wessels Morweng and his team at the launch of the North West 2026 Easter Traffic Activation at Bapong Traffic Control Center. The MEC presented the Departmental plan, conducted inspections at the roadblock and public participation at the local shopping centre.

Hon. Sonakile welcomed the Departmental plan, particularly:
• 24-hour law enforcement visibility in Bojanala
• Taxi compliance operations in Ngaka Modiri Molema
• Focus on high-risk routes such as the N4 (GP to Botswana), N14 (Vryburg corridor), and R511 (GP to Brits)
• Scholar transport inspections and speed control measures in Dr Kenneth Kaunda
• Long-distance monitoring in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati

However, support must go hand-in-hand with accountability.
The Committee expects:
• Zero tolerance on drunk driving and reckless behaviour
• Immediate action against non-compliant public transport operators
• Stronger enforcement against pedestrian violations, especially jaywalking
• Improved coordination between provinces, particularly given the high traffic volumes between Gauteng and North West.

Hon. Sonakile said ‘ultimately, road safety is a shared responsibility. Law enforcement must be visible and decisive, but road users must also act responsibly’.
One life lost is one too many.

We urge all motorists and pedestrians: Arrive alive this Easter.
