The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Basetsana R.S Dantjie conducted oversight visits at Charora Secondary and Chaneng Primary Schools in Chaneng near Rustenburg to check and assess the schools’ readiness for the 2024 school year.
Hon. Dantjie began the visits at Charora Secondary School’s morning assembly where she also motivated scholars to have discipline and obedience during the 2024 school year. “We need to have learners that come to school on time and are respectful to teachers and fellow learners. I also urge learners that bully other learners to stop with the threats and harassment and they shouldn’t teach others that bad behaviour. In recent times, bullying has become the biggest threat in our schools and it is a worrying factor.
“Patience, love and kindness is needed amongst all of us as members of the society who are involved in our schools. I encourage learners to start early on the school academic year so that they can have a good foundation for the year end examinations,” said Hon. Dantjie.
“Young male learners should also protect their female counterparts on gender-based violence and bullying. Results for this year’s results should also be good,” said Hon. Dantjie.
Both schools did not have major challenges except shortage of school desks and tables at Charora Secondary School and bullying problems. The School Principal, Ms. Mabel Mmutle said local mining companies have been assisting the school. “The mines donated stuff including school fence and furniture and will replace old water system including ablution facilities,” said Ms. Mmutle.
The Principal at Chaneng Primary School, Mr. Silas Modisane said the school needs social workers who can assist with bullying. “We suspect that this issue is caused by societal problems of these learners at home and we need serious intervention,” said Mr. Modisane.
Hon. Dantjie said the Legislature appreciates the effort of both Principals on instilling discipline. “We will engage the department to fast track the processes of assisting both schools with minor renovations such as fence and ablution facilities. We will also assist them with combating bullying by providing motivational speakers to the affected learners,” said Hon. Dantjie.
