The Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature Hon. Basetsana R. S. Dantjie, acting on behalf of the Provincial Speaker’s Forum sends heartfelt condolences to family, friends and colleagues of the late Cllr. Fikile Afred Jakeni who passed on after a shot illness on Thursday 01 June 2023.
During his untimely demise, Cllr Jakeni was serving as a Speaker of Ditsobotla Local Municipality, a position he had ascended to after the December 2022 bi-elections in Ditsobotla. “As the Speakers’ Forum we were looking forward to pick his brains on issues affecting the local government sphere, with the aim of turning around municipalities in the province.
“His death comes at a critical time, when the Ditsobotla local Municipality is put under mandatory intervention by the North West Provincial Government. It is a difficult time for the municipality,” said the Hon. Speaker Dantjie.
Cllr Jakeni rose to prominence in the 1990’s as a Congress of South African Students Organisation (COSAS) activist and has occupied several leadership positions in the African National Congress, ANC Youth League as well as South African Municipal Workers Union.
“Cllr Jakeni’s death is a huge loss to the people of Bokone Bophirima. Our heartfelt condolences goes to his family, friends, comrades and the people of the North West. May the Lord comfort us all as a people,” said the Hon. Speaker Dantjie.
