The North West Provincial Legislature’s Standing Committee on Legislative Review and Implementation of House Resolutions led by Chairperson of Committees, Hon. Kabelo Mataboge processed petitions from the Ngaka Modiri Molema district.
As part of strengthening the role of legislature through oversight and public participation, members had the opportunity to sit with petitioners along with relevant senior officials from municipalities and departments to resolve outstanding petitions in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district.
The North West Legislature affords members of the public, through petitioning, a chance to formally write to an official person or body (as a court or board) a petition for equitable relief. The Petitioner can submit the petition via email, hand delivery and e-Petition system, which goes to the Public Participation Unit for initial processing before it is handed to relevant committees.
The committee met with about 11 petitioners who amongst others raised issues and sought intervention on incomplete housing projects; facilitation of outstanding payment of sub-contractors; incomplete toilets, boreholes and reservoirs.
Ms. Mosidi Magome from Mam Property Development, sought intervention from the committee with regard to an outstanding payment of over R350 000 from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The petitioner stated that the Department has not paid them for the work they were appointed for, which was to install a 15km fence since 2017.
“We have been sent from pillar to post about our payment and we forwarded all relevant documentation to the Head of department who has not responded to date about our payment,” said Ms Mosidi
The Committee instructed the department to assist petitioners and pay what is due to them within 30 days.
Hon Mataboge appreciated efforts taken to resolve outstanding issues and promised to conduct oversight on all cases presented before the committee to check progress.
